Being the county seat, Sidney houses both the Fremont County Sheriff's Office and the Sidney Police; the Sheriff's Department working out of the County Jail building at 710 Ohio (mailing address 701 Cass) and the Police Department working from City Hall at 604 Clay.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Department provides police protection for the county, holds the Fremont County Jail and serves as the local Iowa State Probation office. The force is made up of full time officers and reserve deputies.

The Sidney Police Department was re-established in October of 2006 after more than a ten year hiatus. The Chief of Police is Derek Baier who receives help from Todd Poppie. The office is located in City Hall. Derek Baier came to the department from the Kingsley Police Department and was state certified though Western Iowa Technical College. Todd Poppie came to the department after retiring from the Navy and has attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and received his state certification. The Sidney Police Department bases its policing on 8 main principles;

1. The protection of human life is the highest priority.
2. We must demonstrate honor, integrity, and professionalism in all our actions.
3. We must treat everyone with dignity and respect.
4. We must protect the rights of the individual.
5. We must be loyal to the community, its citizens, and the department.
6. Our decisions will be based on common sense, and will be well balanced, legal, and free from favoritism and prejudice while upholding the high standards of our profession.
7. We appreciate the differences in people and recognize that their unique abilities and backgrounds bring strength and caring to our community.
8. We will work closely with the citizens, city council, and the mayor to ensure that we are addressing the issues that concern our community.
